Sharing Authentic Archival Documents in Collective Digital Formats

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is offering grants for projects that aim to publish historical records, providing access to these valuable documents and offering editorial context for a better understanding of American history.

Eligible applicants are practitioners engaged in editing, recovery, or research activities, with demonstrated previous publication experience. To apply, one must submit a detailed proposal that includes a clear work plan, bibliography, writing samples, letters of reference, and a publisher's letter of interest or commitment.

The grants, which can reach up to $125,000, are designed to support projects that focus on the papers of major figures from American history or cover broad historical movements. The historical value and expected usefulness to broad audiences must justify the costs of the projects.

eLaboratories, or eLabs, serves as a platform for these projects. eLabs focuses on making source materials accessible and discoverable, publishing editions online and in print. It also cultivates connections, conversations, and collaborations among practitioners.

The program has supported over 300 editions since 1964, with the number of grants awarded each year ranging from 20 to 24. The editions are available in microfilm, print, and digital formats.

For precise information about the application process, one should consult the specific NHPRC grant announcement and instructions available on their website or the NEH grants portal. The applications undergo a staff eligibility review followed by peer review by expert reviewers familiar with historical publication projects. The final funding recommendations are made by NEH program officers and the National Council on the Humanities.
