Sheriff Warns of Rising Sextortion Cases, Urges Open Parent-Child Dialogue
Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez has issued a warning about a rise in sextortion cases in the area. He urges parents to talk openly with their children about online dangers to prevent further incidents.
Sextortion, as defined by the FBI, involves predators coercing children into sending explicit content by threatening exposure or demanding money. Victims may remain silent due to shame or fear, allowing the exploitation to continue.
Dominguez, along with Terri Markham, Executive Director of Uprising Foundation, and Mike Alzheimer, have been raising awareness about this issue. They recently appeared on a local platform's Public Pulse to discuss online exploitation. Markham stresses the importance of age-appropriate communication as the best prevention. Uprising, in partnership with schools and organizations across Wyoming, creates safe spaces to discuss these topics openly.
The Uprising Foundation, alongside local law enforcement, is working to combat sextortion and other online exploitation issues. They encourage parents to have open conversations with their children about online dangers and to seek help if they suspect any wrongdoing.
