Trouble Ahead for Summer Travels
Nestled in the heart of Germany, the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt is a region known for its beautiful landscapes and historical charm. But come July, it's not just the tourism that takes a hit. The local students, who typically rely on the Germany Ticket for year-round transportation, find themselves in a pickle.
That's because the Burgenland district, much like others in Saxony-Anhalt, covers the costs of student transport during the school term but not during July, a month that falls entirely within the summer holidays. Goetz Ulrich, the district administrator, makes it clear, "Since it's holidays and school transport gets suspended during that time, there's no need for us to drive students to school. Our task, as a municipality, is not to pay students Germany Tickets so they can travel during the holidays."

Rising Concerns 🔺
Goetz Ulrich acknowledges the popular appeal of the Germany Ticket among students, "I myself have three children, and I can imagine how great it would be to travel all year round, even during holidays." However, the question of fairness arises when it comes to state-funded travel during holidays. Ulrich, who is also the President of the District Association of Saxony-Anhalt, fears uneven treatment if students could travel on state expense during holidays with the Germany ticket, while others cannot. "In our district, we support around 7,200 of our 19,000 students with the Germany ticket during the school term. With an estimated approximately 1.5 million euros spent just for my district on holiday tickets during the six weeks of holidays, we simply can't afford it."
Additional Districts Face Similar Challenges 🔺
Districts like Harz and Mansfeld-Südharz share the same concerns as Burgenland. In these regions, students may not be able to use their student Germany Ticket in July as usual, as the ticket will be reactivated again in August, coinciding with the start of the new school term.
