Student dismissed from education institution following intervention to disarm peer with firearm
A Michigan mother, Savitra McClurkin, is on a mission to get her 11-year-old son back in school following his expulsion from the Dwight Rich School of the Arts. The incident that led to this suspension occurred within the school's premises.
McClurkin's son, who is in the seventh grade and has a background in hunting, disarmed and disassembled a classmate's gun out of fear. The weapon, which had live bullets, was later discarded by McClurkin's son.
The current superintendent of the Lansing School District, Benjamin Shuldiner, is responsible for decisions regarding the suspension of McClurkin's son. However, the Lansing School District has declined to comment on the issue.
McClurkin's son, a bright kid who wants to be a regular kid, has never been in trouble before. Despite this, his actions were not immediately reported to an adult, a fact that McClurkin finds troubling.
In an effort to understand the situation better, McClurkin made an appearance at the Lansing School Board meeting. She believes that her son was helping the other students by disarming the gun.
McClurkin has been trying to contact the Lansing School District for a response since the discipline was handed down. She is hoping for a resolution that will allow her son to return to school and continue his education.
McClurkin's son's expulsion has left the family in a difficult position. The mother is now trying to get her son back in school, hoping that he can resume his education and return to a normal life.
