Temporary School Road Construction at Elisabethschule in Lünen-Brambauer: Initiative to Minimize Hazardous Parking and Turnaround by Parent Taxis through Imposition of Parent Taxes
In a bid to create a safer environment for kids on their way to school, the city of Dortmund is taking significant steps to improve school routes. One of the measures being implemented is the introduction of school streets, where motorized vehicles are not allowed at certain times.
Starting from Tuesday, September 16, a driving ban applies to all motorized vehicles between 07:15 and 08:15, and between 15:00 and 16:00 at the temporary school street in Lünen. This temporary school street is situated at the Elisabethschule in Lünen-Brambauer at "Zum Karrenbusch 6".
The focus of these measures is to eliminate traffic, parked vehicles, dangerous maneuvers, and improve visibility for kids crossing the street. Jolanta Bialas, head of the Traffic Department, emphasized the importance of parents and relatives not using cars to drop off kids near schools.
The pick-up and drop-off traffic by parents and relatives is a significant factor in creating critical traffic situations for kids near schools. By using parent drop-off points at schools, congestion and dangerous parking and turning maneuvers near schools can be avoided.
Regular and unannounced checks will be carried out on the temporary school street in Lünen. In case of detected traffic violations, repressive measures will be taken. Police officers from the Dortmund Police Presidium conducted targeted checks on the temporary school street in Lünen, explaining the dangers associated with parent taxis and engaging in conversation with those affected.
The city of Lünen has been selected for a pilot project to implement concrete measures on site as part of the European Mobility Week (EMW) from September 16 to 22. School mobility management, a package of measures that aims to make school routes safer, more sustainable, and more independent, is the focus of this year's EMW.
A joint press conference was held on September 18 regarding the established school street in Lünen, with participation from various organizations. The leader of the Dortmund Police Directorate involved with the school street project is Christoph Dünwald, who is the head of the Police Inspection Center (Polizeiinspektion Mitte). Inquiries should be directed to Bartosch Waldowski of the Dortmund Police.
The holidays are not affected by the closure times at the temporary school street in Lünen. The goal of these measures is to ensure a safer school environment for kids throughout the school year. By making conscious decisions to drive kids to school, parents can contribute to creating a safe environment for students and promote traffic competence.
