THW Celebrates 75 Years of Civil Protection in Bavaria
The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), Bavaria's civil protection organisation, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1950 by Otto Lummitzsch, the THW has evolved significantly, adapting its focus to support disaster control in federal states and expanding its competencies in emergency supply and restoration. To mark this milestone, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception for around 350 THW members in Munich.
Initially established to protect the population from war effects and clear post-WWII aftermath, the THW has since grown to around 16,000 volunteers in Bavaria alone. These dedicated individuals donate their free time to safeguard the population. Last year, they played a crucial role in combating the flood disaster caused by the low-pressure system 'Orinoco'.
In 1953, the THW became a federal authority and embarked on its first international mission to the Netherlands. Since then, it has repeatedly adapted its focus, with supporting disaster control of federal states becoming a priority after the Cold War. More recently, in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the THW expanded its competencies in emergency supply and emergency restoration.
As the THW marks its 75th anniversary, it reflects on its history and the vital role its volunteers play in protecting Bavarian communities. The reception hosted by the Bavarian State Chancellery serves as a testament to their commitment and service.
