University of Leibniz Hannover's Michael Fürst and Dr. Yazid Shammout receive Karmarsch-Thought Coin award in Press Release No. 062/2025.

In a significant ceremony held on September 16, 2025, the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) awarded the Karmarsch Medal to Dr. Yazid Shammout, chairman of the Palestinian community in Hannover, and Michael Fürst, president of the Jewish communities in Lower Saxony.

First presented in 1925 by the Hannoversche Hochschulgemeinschaft, the Karmarsch Medal honours individuals who embody the spirit of Karl Karmarsch, the founder of the Polytechnic School, the predecessor of Leibniz University. This year's recipients were recognised for their commitment to peaceful Israeli-Palestinian contact and their ability to maintain dialogue even in times of crisis.

Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, president of LUH, emphasised the importance of respectful coexistence at the ceremony. He stated, "Respect and listening are the strongest weapons against hate." Prof. Epping believes that while technology, economy, and innovation are important, heart, dialogue, and respect for each other are crucial to master the challenges of our time.

Stephan Weil, former Lower Saxony's Minister President, praised the award of the Karmarsch Medal to Dr. Shammout and Mr. Fürst. He finds it significant as it sets a strong sign for understanding, tolerance, and joint action. Weil acknowledges the decades of commitment by these two individuals in keeping the dialogue going and building bridges of trust.

Dr. Volker Müller, chairman of the university society, also emphasised the importance of respectful coexistence. He highlighted that the recipients show that understanding and mutual respect are possible.

The recipients' efforts have significantly contributed to the de-escalation of tensions in Lower Saxony. Despite differing perspectives on complex political issues, they have always prioritised exchange and mutual respect.
