University of Park to Conduct Peacebuilding Workshop

On November 9, 2022, the "Combating Misinformation: Tools and Techniques" event took place at Park University's McCoy Meetin' House, located on the flagship Parkville Campus. This event was part of the annual Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference, hosted by Park University's Center for Global Peace Journalism.

The event featured a panel of three speakers who discussed the impact of misinformation and disinformation on the academic world and professional journalism. Susan Dawson-O'Brien, an adjunct instructor of journalism and media communications, and student media coordinator at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College, presented on the topic of misinformed students in academia.

Steven Youngblood, the founding director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism (CGPJ) and an associate professor of communication arts at Park University, provided an overview and definitions of misinformation and disinformation. His presentation was part of the event at Park University's McCoy Meetin' House.

Derek Donovan, the community engagement editor at The Kansas City Star, presented on the topic of misinformation and professional journalism. He shared insights into the challenges faced by journalists in the digital age and the importance of fact-checking and verification in maintaining the integrity of news reporting.

The event concluded with a panel discussion and questions-and-answers session, allowing attendees to engage with the speakers and gain a deeper understanding of the topics discussed. The event was open to the public, and attendees had the opportunity to learn about the tools and techniques used to combat misinformation in academic and professional journalism.
