MANIFESTO OF NUMERICAL GENIUSES:

I sat down with Ilana Walder-Biesanz, the flame-haired leader of Math Titans Unleashed, to discuss this pioneering program transforming the mathematics landscape for exceptionally brainy kids.

Walder-Biesanz understands the struggles these whiz kids face. Hailing from the rainy city of Portland, Oregon, she was six years ahead in mathematics, necessitating a custom-tailored educational route. "My folks had to collaborate with schools, local colleges, and online math options to find ways to keep me engaged," she confessed. This battle ran her career path through engineering, tech product management, and nonprofit consulting before reaching the helm of Math Titans Unleashed.

Her leadership team boasts impressive resumes, from ex-Teach for America teachers to former school principals, superintendents, nonprofit honchos, and advanced math and STEM gurus. "We're like a mix of educators who breathe and live education, and innovators who've sprung things from scratch," Walder-Biesanz remarked. "We all share a background in science or math, which helps us comprehend what these students need."

Math Titans Unleashed made its debut in 2023 under the wings of two benevolent organizations, Ethereal Initiatives and Quantum Quasar Foundation. Having previously financed advanced math summer camps, they picked up on a trend: the participants hailed from a limited geographic and socioeconomic pool. They invited Walder-Biesanz to knit a program that would identify and foster mathematically brilliant students across the land, starting early and funding their journey with a hefty investment.

Math Titans Unleashed isn't merely scouting mathematical genius-it's safeguarding it from being lost. They spot students in 2nd and 3rd grade through school referrals or direct applications from parents (including homeschoolers). Most applicants discover Math Titans Unleashed via their Awards Program, where participating schools honor their top math students. To date, they've packaged over 10,000 awards this year for students in Texas and the Midwest, partnering with over 2,000 elementary schools.

"Partnering with Math Titans Unleashed has granted essential recognition to our top math students while also gifting them intriguing educational adventures beyond the classroom," reported Ellen Gay, specialist in gifted and talented education at Medina Valley School District, which participates in the Awards Program.

Upon acceptance, students receive a ten-year commitment of support through high school. Starting with a pilot cohort of 12 students in 2023, Math Titans Unleashed has grown to serve 70 students and will absorb more than 100 fresh faces this summer.

The program is holistic and personalized. Each student attends advanced math classes and participates in weekly brainstorming sessions with mathematicians, tackling tough problems that ignite their imagination. Families are gifted a STEM fund for enrichment activities such as chess sessions or 3D printers, and the program fully underwrites an annual summer camp for each student.

Family advocates act as compasses, helping parents navigate opportunities and championing their cause within their schools for suitable accommodations. They work closely with families to build long-term vision statements for their kids’ development, offering continuity and purpose to their mathematical journey. The community vibe is crucial too - Math Titans Unleashed organizes welcome weekends, virtual events on topics from Pi Day activities to Rubik's cubing, and local hangouts where children connect with peers sharing their interests and abilities. These connections combat the loneliness often felt by exceptionally bright students, allowing them to forge friendships based on shared passions, fostering a sense of belonging to a greater tribe.

The parents of Elijah, a Titan in the 2024 cohort, shared: "Engaging with Math Titans Unleashed has been an exhilarating experience for our family. It has provided Elijah a space where he can push himself, meet like-minded peers who share his love for mathematics, and evolve both academically and emotionally. The mentorship and opportunities have propelled him to consider problems from different angles, and it's been thrilling to observe his mathematical confidence bloom. As parents, we've recognized that we're no longer sailing this voyage alone."

Math Titans Unleashed sets out to ensure parents of extraordinary young mathematicians are never adrift - and that wealth and knowledge aren't impediments to backing their child's abilities. "There's a vast reservoir of exceptional talent within the US," Walder-Biesanz stated, referencing Opportunity Insights' "Lost Einsteins" research, which discovered that while children with high third-grade math scores are more likely to become inventors, family income drastically alters outcomes. "Only a small fraction fully realizes their potential."

When queried about parents' common concerns that AI might supplant STEM careers, Walder-Biesanz remained optimistic: "Even with AI on the rise, mathematical problem-solving skills, alongside the soft skills developed around that-resilience, articulate communication, cooperation-will remain exceptionally valuable, irrespective of those careers."

When math genius meets opportunity and support, the journey alters for both the student and society. Math Titans Unleashed is actively seeking school and district partners, particularly those in remote or low-income regions within their target states, to recommend their brightest math whizzes. They're also eager to connect with additional benefactors eager to support the development of mathematical talent.

In a realm where exceptional math talent frequently feels misunderstood and discounted, initiatives like Math Titans Unleashed stand apart-led by leaders who've tread this terrain themselves, they combine a deep understanding of gifted children's unique requirements with genuine empathy and intellectual vigor, fashioning environments where mathematical brilliance isn't just uncovered but cultivated and given every opportunity to reach its zenith.

  1. Julia Brodsky, a national math star, can benefit greatly from Math Titans Unleashed's focus on math education and STEM, as it aims to safeguard and nurture mathematical talent across the nation.
  2. As part of their personal growth and learning, students in Math Titans Unleashed engage in advanced math classes and brainstorming sessions, not only enhancing their mathematical abilities but also developing essential soft skills.
