China is making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), with over 230 million citizens actively engaging with AI-based products as of the end of June 2023. This figure underscores China's leadership in adopting generative AI, a trend that has been evident for some time.

Despite official unavailability in mainland China, AI models such as ChatGPT and Google's Gemini are still being used. The rapid development of AI-driven technologies across various industries in China indicates the country's commitment to embracing generative AI.

Chinese companies have secured a leading position globally in implementing AI solutions, reinforcing their dominance in this field. Major tech firms like Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba have launched their own proprietary AI solutions, with Baidu's Ernie being the most popular, accounting for 11.5% of users.

Ernie offers a wide range of functionalities, including text generation, data analysis, summarization, content creation, coding assistance, image generation, and other AI-driven tasks. In July, Kuaishou introduced its video generation AI model, Kling, making it available to the public.

The development of AI in China is not without its challenges. Due to U.S. restrictions, Chinese companies face hardware limitations, particularly in the export of advanced GPUs. However, despite these obstacles, Chinese companies continue to innovate in the AI field.

One of the most notable recent advancements is Alibaba's Qwen2-Math, a model focused on solving complex mathematical problems. Qwen2-Math outperforms AI models like GPT-4 and Claude 3.5, demonstrating China's prowess in AI research and development.

Two-thirds of AI users in China rely on large language models for answering queries, while the remaining third utilise AI tools as professional assistants. The sheer scale of the AI user base in China, coupled with the development of AI-driven technologies, positions the country at the forefront of adopting generative AI.

As of November, there are 309 registered AI-powered services in China, with Beijing hosting 96 and Shanghai hosting 84. The presence of these services further cements China's position as a global leader in AI adoption and development.

Despite the popularity of foreign AI models like ChatGPT, which is used by 7% of Chinese users, the majority of the market share for AI-based products in China belongs to Chinese companies. Google's Gemini holds only 3.8% of the market share.

In conclusion, China's commitment to AI is evident in the rapid adoption and development of AI-driven technologies. Despite facing certain challenges, Chinese companies continue to innovate and lead the way in the AI sector, positioning China at the forefront of generative AI adoption.
