Venerable Homecoming Award Recipient Albert Wunsch Remains Vital at 80 Years Old
In the vibrant city of Neuss, a local figure has been making waves for decades. Albert Wunsch, a renowned educator, community leader, and industrial history advocate, has been an integral part of the city's landscape for over five decades.
Born and raised in Neuss, Wunsch has lived in the city for an impressive 55 years. His commitment to the community is evident in his various roles, including his 30-year tenure as a member of the Youth Welfare Committee and his 50-year service as a board member of the "Haus der Jugend" support association.
Wunsch's passion for education is evident in his long-standing teaching career. He has held lectureships at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Düsseldorf for over 25 years and was a lecturer at the FH Düsseldorf for nearly 30 years. More recently, he has been teaching at the University of Applied Sciences and Management (FOM) in Essen and Neuss for more than a decade. His subjects range from Introduction to Psychology, Communication/Interaction, Conflict Management, and Ethics.
Wunsch's teaching style is unique, emphasizing sensitivity and personal reflection. He encourages students to write portfolios containing personal details during semester breaks, a practice that fosters introspection and self-growth.
Wunsch's theories are not only thought-provoking but also inspiring, aligning with his motto: "Only those who move can make a difference."
In addition to his educational endeavours, Wunsch has made significant strides in preserving Neuss' industrial history. He has successfully saved numerous historically significant items from demolition in the past, including remnants of the former Bauer & Schaurte screw factory. He continues to advocate for the inclusion of these relics in the planning for the new development near the main station in Neuss.
Wunsch also envisions practical ways to teach local children and youth about industrial history. He proposes hands-on activities such as cutting threads, using rivets, or working at a forge, making history come alive for a new generation.
Wunsch's contributions extend beyond Neuss. He is currently coaching the transformation process of a company based in the Ruhr area and Switzerland, with a focus on bringing together teams of older and younger employees. He also continues to lead the Malaika Foundation, an educational project in Nigeria, which he established with his late wife Margret.
Over the years, Wunsch has been honoured with several accolades, including the Federal Cross of Merit and the Neuss Heimat Prize. His dedication to education, industrial history, and community development continues to make a significant impact in Neuss and beyond.
