Vietnam Tackles EV Safety in 2050 Transition Ambition

Vietnam, a leader in ASEAN's shift to electric vehicles (EVs), is addressing safety challenges as it aims for a complete transition by 2050. At the International Symposium on Mobility Safety Initiatives (ISMSI 2025) in HCM City on October 1, experts discussed crucial aspects of this transition.

Dr. Nguyen Van An presented a rear-end collision warning system for electric bicycles at the symposium. This system is crucial given that two-wheelers make up 80-90% of daily travel in major cities like Hà Nội and HCM City. The rapid increase in electric two-wheeler sales, from 1.5 million units in 2019 to over 2.3 million in 2023, underscores the need for such safety innovations.

International experts highlighted key issues: infrastructure and training for users, access to safety technologies for low-income workers, and technical safety of electric motorbikes. They also emphasized the importance of educating drivers about new EV features like regenerative braking and quick acceleration. A team from the University of Virginia presented AI models and collision warning systems for two-wheelers, demonstrating the global interest in Vietnam's EV transition.

Vietnam's ambitious EV transition faces challenges like battery and charger quality control, and the need for warning signals on silent EVs. Clear safety regulations are urgently needed. With international support and innovative solutions, Vietnam is well on its way to achieving its 2050 goal and phasing out fossil fuel-powered motorbikes by 2040.
