Winter-Spring 2018 Lecture Series Unveiled at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music
UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Hosts Distinguished Lecture Series
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is set to host its Distinguished Lecture Series in Winter-Spring 2018, offering a diverse range of topics and speakers focused on musicology, performance, and contemporary musical scholarship.
The series, open to the public and admission-free, invites a variety of distinguished scholars and musicians to explore music history, musicology, and practice-based research. For instance, faculty such as Kristi Brown-Montesano delve into musical humanity and culture, reflecting the academic environment the lecture series supports. Other contemporary lecturers include Joseph Salem and professor Eidsheim, who engage with topics on music composition and experimental epistemology respectively.
One of the highlights of the series is a mini-symposium on Jamaican popular music and dance, hosted by Donna Hope, a scholar on Jamaican popular music and dance, and dancehall innovator Latonya Style. The event is scheduled for May 17-18.
The series also features a lecture by Robynn Stilwell on Ernie Kovacs' early television work on Feb. 15. Kovacs, an American comedian, actor, and writer, is known for his influence on Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Chevy Chase.
Another significant event is a lecture by Phil Ford on "magical hermeneutics" and its potential value for music analysis, scheduled for April 5. Ford, the co-author of the blog Dial 'M' For Musicology, is currently working on a book focusing on magical and occult styles of thought.
The series addresses growing concerns surrounding intersectionality in academic discourse, with a lecture critically examining Western culture and values through a musical lens.
In addition to these, the series includes a lecture by UCLA professors Robert Fink, Jessica Holmes, and Uri McMillan, as well as guest scholars Beth Levy and Stephan Pennington. Notable speakers like dancehall creator Latonya Style, dance scholar Donna Hope, and Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer are also part of the series.
Iyer, a MacArthur Fellow, will lecture on a topic of his choosing on May 17. Donna Hope's publications include single-author monographs and edited volumes on reggae and dancehall music.
