Yale President Leads Students in Lobbying Against 21% Endowment Tax
Yale University President Maurie McInnis has been actively engaging with lawmakers in Washington D.C. to advocate against a proposed 21 percent tax on university endowment returns. The University has been rallying its community and students to support its lobbying efforts.
McInnis has been visiting the nation's capital monthly since the spring semester, meeting with key lawmakers on committees related to higher education. She has urged Yale community members to contact their senators and voice their opposition to the tax proposal. The University has also been financially supporting and coaching students to speak out against the tax bill at Capitol Hill press conferences.
One such student is Colten Danelski '27, a Yale junior from Minnesota. Danelski received an email asking him to share his experiences and plans after graduation. He was one of about four dozen students who provided statements for the lobbying push. Danelski's statement was submitted on the same day he was contacted by Saybrook Head of College Thomas Near and Dean Adam Haliburton.
The University's lobbying campaign has been focused on opposing a Republican proposal to increase the turbo tax on university endowment returns. This proposal, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill, was passed by the House of Representatives in an earlier iteration, subjecting Yale to a 21 percent rate. The endowment tax hike has already prompted budgetary changes at Yale and is set to go into effect on July 1.
Yale University's lobbying efforts, led by President Maurie McInnis, have been intense and multifaceted, involving students and community members. The University's opposition to the proposed endowment turbo tax hike reflects its commitment to protecting its financial stability and the interests of its students.
